Audio tour apps compared: which one fits your trip?

There is no single best audio tour app; it depends on the trip. For offline, story-led walking tours made by local storytellers, VoiceMap fits best. For a free audio companion in Europe, Rick Steves Audio Europe. For self-guided walking routes in many cities, GPSmyCity. For road trips and national parks, GuideAlong. For tapping any building or square and hearing a source-checked story about it, Guidera, the app I build.

Disclosure: I'm the developer of Guidera, one of the apps below. Every fact about the other apps comes from their App Store listing and official website, checked on 1 October 2026. There are no affiliate links, and I haven't compared ratings or reviews. Details and prices change, so check each app before you buy.

Yes. Rick Steves Audio Europe is a free app for iOS and Android that organises Rick Steves' audio into playlists by destination. It includes self-guided walking tours taken from his guidebooks and interviews from his public radio programme Travel with Rick Steves. Audio is downloaded to your phone, so no Wi-Fi or mobile connection is needed to listen.

GPSmyCity offers self-guided walking tours and travel articles for more than 1,800 cities, with over 7,000 walks according to its website. The app is designed to work offline with offline city maps. It is available on iOS and Android.

Limitation: the App Store listing describes voice-guided turn-by-turn directions as part of the paid upgrade, rather than narrated stories, and route maps also need the upgrade.

Which app can tell me about any building I'm looking at?

That is what Guidera is for. Guidera is an iPhone AI tour guide that tells source-checked stories about any place on the map, in 9 languages. You tap any place Apple Maps knows, not only stops on a fixed tour. Before narrating, Guidera researches the place from Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, OpenStreetMap and official city websites, and a verifier removes anything those sources don't support. You can pick one of three guides (Arthur the Historian, Max the Local Insider or Luna the Artist) and one of four tones. There are also 39 curated walking tours in 35 cities.

The free tier includes 5 AI stories a day (up to 20 with short ads). Building your own tours, sharing tours as links and story cards are free. Premium adds audio narration, Walkman mode for tours, AI-planned tours, up to 10 offline tours with audio and follow-up questions, and is sold as passes rather than a subscription: €1 for 3 days, €3 for a week or €7 for a month.

Limitations: Guidera works offline only for tours you have downloaded: free users can download one featured tour at a time (text only, after a short video), and Premium allows up to 10 tours with audio. Map tiles aren't saved, and new stories need a connection. It runs on iPhone (iOS 18.5 or later) with an Apple Watch companion, but not on Android.

How did I choose these apps, and what is my bias?

I'm Mehmet Selim Çetin, the developer of Guidera, so I have an obvious interest in this comparison. To keep it fair, I picked established apps that people mention for self-guided audio tours, and I used only facts that each app states on its own App Store listing and official website, checked on 1 October 2026. I left out ratings, review counts and anything I couldn't confirm. Prices are shown as the app or store lists them, in their currency. If something here is out of date, email mehmetselim692@icloud.com and I'll correct it.
